Alfalfa Established Successfully in Intercropping with Corn in the Midwest US

چکیده
Integrating alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) with corn (Zea mays for grain will increase biodiversity, reduce the negative environmental impact of monoculture and farm profitability. The objectives this research were to evaluate forage productivity nutritive value, along stand establishment in a system Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota. experimental design was randomized complete block four replicates at each site. Treatments included were: sole (i.e., check; T1), (T2), intercropped into (T3), prohexadione-treated (T4), spring-seeded year after intercropping (T5), which planted plots T1 previous year. All sites had below normal rainfall 2016 2017. Corn yield significantly lower when (T3 T4) compared check crop (no alfalfa, T1). reduction ranged from 14.0% 18.8% (T1). biomass reduced by 15.9% 25.8%. In seeding year, seasonal greater competition absent all environments. season almost double than (spring-seeded alfalfa; T5). second production there no meaningful differences (p > 0.05) across treatments, indicating systems does not affect past first Prohexadione-calcium, growth regulator, did density, value. value dependent on harvest date treatments. Results our study suggest that establishing is feasible can be potential alternative upper Midwest region. However, under drought conditions, might less resilient since between soil moisture intensified or moisture-limited likely depress yield. Research targeted reintroduce perennial crops current dominant corn–soybean US Belt urgently needed improve stability resiliency systems.

Intercropping corn and kudzu in a rotation system with soybean
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sowing procedures and the seed sowing rate of kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides cv. ‘Comum’) in corn on corn plant development, forage dry matter production, weed infestation and soybean plant development and yield. The kudzu seeds were either broadcasted over the terrain or sown in furrows (in the main plots) at rates, in both cases, of 400...
متن کاملNonlinear nitrous oxide (N2O) response to nitrogen fertilizer in onfarm corn crops of the US Midwest
Row-crop agriculture is a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O) globally, and results from recent field experiments suggest that significant decreases in N2O emissions may be possible by decreasing nitrogen (N) fertilizer inputs without affecting economic return from grain yield. We tested this hypothesis on five commercially farmed fields in Michigan, USA planted with corn in 2007 and 2008. Six ...
متن کاملWeed Control via Intercropping with Gliricidia. Ii. Corn Crop
A reduction in herbicide use is one of modern agriculture’s main interests and several alternatives are being investigated with this objective, including intercropping. Gliricídia (Gliricidia sepium) mulch has no allelopathic effect on corn or beans but significantly decreased the population of some weed species. The objective of this study was to evaluate green ear and grain yield in corn cult...
متن کاملNitrous oxide emissions from corn-soybean systems in the midwest.
Soil N2O emissions from three corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] systems in central Iowa were measured from the spring of 2003 through February 2005. The three managements systems evaluated were full-width tillage (fall chisel plow, spring disk), no-till, and no-till with a rye (Secale cereale L. 'Rymin') winter cover crop. Four replicate plots of each treatment were establishe...
متن کاملIntercropping corn with soybean, lupin and forages: yield component responses
Intercropping systems influence yield variables of the component crops, such as harvest index, hundred seed weight, number of reproductive organs and number of seeds, within each reproductive unit. Two experiments were carried out at each of two sites during 1993 and 1994. The first experiment investigated the effects of seeding soybean or lupin alone or in combination with one of three forages...
